Marimba in the Woods
Somewhere deep in a forest–in a town called Hämeenkyrö, Finland–rests a lonely marimba patiently waiting to be struck. The piece was created during a three month residency program at the Arteles Creative Center in the summer of 2017. All of the materials used to create the marimba came from discarded waste during the construction of a new roof over the resident artist housing. Each marimba board was selected and arranged without alteration, giving the marimba a unique tuning–”tuned-to-the-key-of-roof”. The boards were then coated in a traditional Finish coating of birch tar to help preserve and protect the wood from the elements.
